#5 Artificial Intelligence: A Double-Edged Sword

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has pushed us into a new era of technological advancement, with the possibility of revolutionizing industries and changing our lives. After watching In the Age of AI by FRONTLINE, I was intrigued by the incredible possibilities AI offers, but also worried about the ethical dilemmas it brings. While AI holds a lot of potential, it is important to consider its ethical issues, benefits, and risks. As we navigate this new era, I believe AI can be beneficial if it is used properly and in a controlled manner.

The Ethics

One of the primary ethical concerns highlighted in the documentary is AI's ability to worsen societal bias. AI systems are trained on large datasets, and if these datasets reflect existing biases, AI may unintentionally repeat them. One example that stands out to me is facial recognition technology, which is less accurate for people of color, raising concerns about racial discrimination. The question becomes even more important when these biases could impact legal systems.

Additionally, the potential for AI to be used negatively is scary. FRONTLINE explored the rise of AI in surveillance systems, sparking important questions about privacy and civil liberties. When AI is used to track personal data and monitor behavior, where is the line between safety and invasion of privacy?

Potential Benefits

Despite these ethical challenges, AI offers many benefits across a wide variety of areas. In healthcare, for example, AI can analyze medical images with impressive speed and accuracy and help in developing new treatments which leads to more effective and efficient help. In transportation, self-driving cars have the potential to reduce human error, improving safety on our roads. The opportunity to use AI in helpful ways is endless, and the possibilities for its positive impact on society seem infinite.

The Risks

However, the risks associated with AI should not be ignored. Taking away jobs is one of the most significant concerns. AI could replace human workers in industries such as manufacturing, retail, and transportation as automation grows. This threatens the socio-economic divide, particularly affecting low-skill jobs which could create an employment crisis.

FRONTLINE highlighted the concentration of AI development within only a few large tech companies. These companies control massive amounts of data, which raises concerns about the power they have over our personal information and the risk of a monopoly. Without proper regulation or understanding of AI, this concentration of power could have heavy consequences for data privacy.

Conclusion

AI is a powerful tool that can shape our future in both positive and negative ways. As the documentary revealed, it is crucial to approach its development and use with caution, along with a commitment to using it ethically. By understanding the potential benefits and risks, we can work together to ensure that AI is implemented responsibly and beneficially.

#4 Navigating the Digital Age: Protecting Privacy in a World of Surveillance

 In today's digital landscape, our personal information is increasingly at risk of various forms of surveillance. After watching four insightful TED Talk videos, I have a better understanding of how serious the issues of privacy and the impact of our digital footprints are.

Our online activities, from social media posts to phone calls, contribute to a permanent digital record often referred to as a "digital tattoo." This record can be exploited by corporations, hackers, and even law enforcement, which could lead to irreparable privacy breaches. Juan Enriquez's metaphor of a digital tattoo is the perfect way to describe how every online action we take adds to an irreversible trace of our personal information.

The technology that we use daily, such as the iPhone has features like location services that can be tools of surveillance. As explained by Christopher Soghoian, our phones are essentially designed for surveillance, making them vulnerable to hackers and the government. Similar to Catherine Crump whose information on the tracking of smaller details like license plate data, reveal just how extensive and intrusive modern surveillance can be.

These privacy concerns are not just theoretical issues; they affect us and those around us personally. The potential for identity theft and unwarranted surveillance can deeply affect people's lives. To address these challenges, the government needs to implement stronger privacy protections. This could include enforcing more transparency in data collection practices or regulating the surveillance of technology. Policies should focus more on limiting the extent of data collection by authorities. 

While technology offers many benefits to society, it also brings endless privacy risks. By understanding these risks and making informed choices, we can safely navigate the digital age and make the necessary changes to protect our privacy.

#3 The 8 Values of Free Expression

 

The 8 values of free expression were created to protect the foundational principles that a healthy democracy needs. The values emphasize things like free speech, self-government, and checking power.

We are constantly talking about the First Amendment, especially in today's political scene, but it is easy to forget how much it shapes our daily lives. Without the protection it provides, the difference in which we interact with each other, our government, and the world would be drastically different.

The Marketplace of Ideas

Originally proposed by John Milton, the Marketplace of Ideas carries the belief that society benefits from allowing individuals to express their free thoughts, controversial or not. The freedom means that ideas can be challenged and validated by the public. 

I see this value in action every day, especially on social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit. These are "modern-day" marketplaces where ideas from all around the world can meet. Although this can sometimes lead to the spread of misinformation, I believe it also gives opportunities for the truth to come forward through deeper discussions and fact-checking. 

This value deeply resonates with me in comparison with the 8 other values because it fights for the protection of intellectual freedom and the pursuit of truth. It is a reminder that in a democratic society, our voices should all be heard and listened to.

Promote Innovation & Protect Dissent

Promote Innovation expresses that communities that value and protect free speech are more likely to be energized and full of diverse ideas. Jack Balkin, author of Living Originalism, suggests that when people have free expression, without fear of censorship, they can explore new ideas, take risks, and contribute to the knowledge and progress of society.

Similarly, Protect Diessent, explained by Steve Shiffrin in Dissent, Injustice, and the Meanings of America, emphasizes the positive role that minority views play in a democracy. Our system is designed to make sure all voices matter and prevent a "mob-like" rule, as well.

These two values are important to me because they work hand in hand to create a society that is creative, and dynamic, but also accountable. Promote Innovation ensures new ideas can be shared, while Protect Dissent guarantees those ideas can be explored and challenged with no suppression. Innovation thrives in environments where people can express their thoughts openly and leads to breakthroughs in innovation, helping grow our society. 

The ability to ensure minority voices are heard and create an environment where questioning and criticism are seen as essential things for a healthy democracy. These two values help maintain a creative and forward-thinking society while being fair and open to all voices.

The 8 Values of Free Expression are critical for preserving our democratic principles and fostering a vibrant, innovative society. They ensure that we can openly share, challenge, and refine ideas, driving progress. These values remind us of the importance of protecting a space where multiple voices can contribute to the ongoing desire for truth and understanding, which is something I strongly support.

#2 The Workings of the U.S. Supreme Court

 

The Supreme Court has been the backbone of the American Justice System for nearly 200 years. Over this period, it has witnessed and influenced countless events, societal transformations, and legal developments.

As someone who pays little attention to governmental things, this video answered lingering questions and explained other information I had never heard before. One of the first points I'd like to touch on is that the Supreme Court is the highest in the Federal Judiciary system within the United States. This means the court has ultimate jurisdiction over all federal and state cases, stating that they are the primary interpreters of the Constitution. 

Citizens of the United States have not always been fans of the Supreme Court, however, that changed after the infamous "Marbury V. Madison" Case. This case established the idea of judicial review which was an addition to the system of "checks and balances," confirming the Supreme Court as a co-equal branch of the government. Checks and balances are the system the United States government uses to make sure one branch does not have more power over another. 

The Constitution, as a document, is understood by Supreme Court Justices as something that is constantly evolving, and because their job is to draw the lines of power, avoiding controversy is essentially impossible. 

Within a year, the Supreme Court receives about 7,000 cases but only accepts 100-150 of them. To approve a case, the court needs at least four of nine possible votes. The justices also work independently from one another and instead, have a team of law clerks for assistance. 

Learning more about the duties of a Justice, I also found it interesting that the average serving time is 16 years; however, many may and do serve longer. The longest time a judge had served was 36 years and that was William O. Douglas who was appointed in 1939 and retired in 1975 and the shortest being John Rutledge, who was appointed temporarily during the Senate's recess.

The video changed the way I thought of the Supreme Court because I got to hear first-hand experience of Justices. In the part 1 video, one Justice stated that it was originally very overwhelming taking on the position, but within about 3 years the feeling started to go away. Although being on the Supreme Court is something few people get to experience, I now have a greater understanding and appreciation of their work. 

#1 Navigating the News: My Top 5 Platforms for Staying Informed

 In today's day and age, your source of news differs greatly based on factors like political belief, age, demographics, and more. Personally, I tend to gravitate towards a few platforms that provide me with quick, but detailed information. These sources are social media platforms and are as follows:

1. TikTok

TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms that people of all ages use as a way to access current news, entertainment, and other information. For people in my generation who have shorter attention spans, TikTok is appealing because of its quick but detailed videos that can easily summarize information. The app uses a feature called a "For You" page where it curates content based on what it thinks you'd like based on what you interact with on the platform.  But, you can also use the search bar to find more specific topics. As someone who doesn't watch the news, TikTok is a helpful way for me to get an idea of what is going on in the world within a matter of minutes, and I can find almost all of the information about a topic from different accounts and videos. Since this is the most used app on my phone, it is where most of my information comes from and can be anything from politics to product reviews.

2. Snapchat

My primary use of Snapchat is to keep in contact with my friends, sharing short pictures and videos that allow us to stay connected in a fun and casual way. Snapchat's Discover page, dedicated to news and entertainment, offers a variety of content tailored to users' interests. I occasionally browse this page, where I encounter stories of tragedies, triumphs, and celebrity gossip. While the platform provides quick and easily digestible content, I’ve noticed that many of the articles have typos and aren’t always well-written, which detracts from their credibility. Because of this, I don’t rely on Snapchat as a primary source for news, but it’s an easy way to pass the time when I’m looking for a distraction or just want to see what’s trending.

3. Fox News

The only major news outlet I consistently go to for updates is Fox News. I believe the news and discussions on this platform align with the type of information I care about, particularly in the realm of politics. Being an Apple iPhone user, I take advantage of the News app’s feature that allows me to flag certain pages and receive notifications for new stories and alerts. This feature is particularly convenient allowing me to stay constantly updated without having to actively search for news; instead, the news comes to me. Fox News covers typical topics including sports, politics, entertainment, and more. However, I mainly use Fox for their political coverage because of their Conservative viewpoint, which resonates with my interests and perspective. 

4. LinkedIn

As I get closer to entering the workforce, LinkedIn has become an essential tool for me. The platform has multiple purposes, offering opportunities for networking, professional development, and staying informed about industry trends. I primarily use LinkedIn to connect with professionals in my field, search for internships, and explore potential job opportunities. It’s also a great way to maintain relationships with peers and stay updated on what’s happening within companies I’m interested in. LinkedIn’s emphasis on professional networking is helping me build a strong professional presence and stay informed about the latest developments in my industry.

5. Word of Mouth

Another valuable source of information for me is word of mouth. This could come from family, friends, professors, or even strangers I encounter. In my experience, word of mouth isn't always the most reliable way to learn about new topics, events, or opportunities. Growing up in a household with strong opinions, I wasn't always exposed to a wide range of perspectives but was encouraged to think critically about the information I received. While I appreciate hearing different viewpoints and discussing them with others, I remain confident in my ability to form my own opinions. I often use word of mouth as a starting point, then turn to other platforms to gain a fuller understanding of the topic.
